===== Criterion for selection: =====
1. Matches basics of abstract strategy games (include some perfect information and chance)
2. Placed in appropriate categories. Games played abnormal equipment put in Alternative. Games with commercial license in Alternative commercial division.
===== Basic layout of this Wiki entry: =====
1. The top level division for the site consists of classics (older abstracts with established associations, or should have associations if the don't), regular (these use equipment that I would be considered to be accepted as standard equipment for IAGO), and alternative (these involves no standard equipment and is divided between non-commercial and games that are sold commercially).
2. The classic and regular category are divided into the 4 divisions (escape, position, territory and elimination), and one other divisions (Fortuna). Fortuna is used to handle hidden information games and games like backgammon, that use a randomizer at the start of the turn or start of game. Each of these categories currently have two subdivisions.
2a. A game that belongs in one of these divisions, has its name put in it under the right division and sub-division (and. Beneath this is an alphabetized list of games and a URL link next to them so people can learn more about the games. The format is: “Name of game” [Comment(s)] (“URL {link1 link2 link3 etc}”)
2b. Objective is to have one entry per line.
3. The alternative division has two subdivisions, non-commercial (games in public domain) and commercial (they are sold or were sold, and have questions of whether or not IAGO could reproduce them at a later date). This division does not have the games divided into the 5 classes that categorize games in the classics and regular divisions. The reason for this is the main reason for the classes and subdivisions is that they will mostly be used for setting up Athlons and IAGO can be assured that all IAGO members will own the necessary equipment to play these games. Feel free to develop your own class/division structure for these games, and create a separate wiki entry for it, naming the classification structure for yourself. Actually, it might be best to have a Wiki entry started for people to describe their own views of how abstract strategy games should be divided, or even come up with more detailed subdivisions for currently lists.
4. For the divisions, there are basic rules governing them. Each game is considered to belong to one and only one division (and subdivision). If a game has elimination as a category and another victory condition (like forming a pattern or getting to a victory square, aka escape) the game gets classified by another category. Games that involve stalemating one's opponent, are considered to be elimination games. There may be a need for a few games that are exceptions to the rule (that involve pattern formation and escape victory conditions and territory). As of this point, these are undecided how to be handled and will have a “Undecided” section for to place them in the wiki entry.
5. Any entries will need to be formatted a bit to fit in here correctly. The two slashes at the end of a line, are linebreaks. if you want to have your entries have linebreaks in them, use the slashes you see all about in this document to end your line.
5a. This Wiki program appears to automatically make URL links active when entered in.
6. When doing a Wiki entry, add a summary in the line below this field, as to what you did. If it is minor, check the minor checkbox.
Please respect this layout, and people create a new wiki entry if they don't like it. Use the discussion forum to discuss this. It is also quite easy for someone to go on how they hate it, tear it down and not provide a replacement. The Wiki page is meant to be a constructive process for people, and serve as a basis to make progress in advancing the cause of all abstract strategy games.
===== Classes/Divisions of games to be played: =====
1. Classic (and Classic variants): There are classics such as chess and go. Also fitting in here would be the idea of -athalons (Athlons). Multigame events where players play a set of very different games. Like someone plays speed chess, mini-go and another game (say checkers) as a classic triathalon.
2. Regular (Modern): These games use classic game equipment, but things completely different. These games are one off the main games and I don't believe have champions, and no association to promote them. Also included are variants on classics, like Speed chess, bughouse, and mini-Go. These games center around a standardize set of equipment for IAGO. These games will also have versions of Athlons.
3. Alternative (Non-commercial and Commercial): These games are usually one game standalone products, which require purchasing of separate equipment. If a game is not able to be played with standard classic game equipment, then it would fit here.
===== Categories of games (Need balance per categories): =====
Classes of game types (based on Zillions site, used for Athlon determination):
1. Escape (Breakthrough/Race) [Location of pieces to positions on board matters]: Players try to get a piece(s) onto key positions on board.
* Bi-sided (Race): Both players try to get from one location to another with one or more of their pieces. Arimaa is here. Both sides have key positions to get to. Locations can be identical or different.
* Uni-sided (Breakthrough: Navigate/block): One player tries to get piece or pieces to location(s) on board and opponent tries to stop them. Tablut is here.
In Escape (Breakthrough/race), win positions for pieces on board is absolute. Victory is occupation 100% of all critical areas.
2. Territory (Occupy/Claim): Player tries to control/own most spaces on board. Go and Othello count here.
* Occupy (absolute): Players occupy spaces directly. Othello applies here.
* Claim (relative): Players try to own spaces indirectly, based on position of pieces on board, according to some rules. Go applies here.
In Territory, ownership of board spaces determines winner. Victory is a control/own majority of all critical areas.
3. Positioning (Chain/Cluster or Connection/Arrangement) [Relationship of pieces' locations to each other matters]: Players configure groups of pieces on the board in some manner.
* Connection (chain): Players try to connect two or more spaces on the board with a chain of their pieces. Hex and Twixt are here.
* Arrangement (cluster): Players try to get their pieces in a certain configuration. Lines of Action, Groups and Teeko are here.
In Positioning, win positions for pieces on board is relative. Relative here means pieces could end up partly being on absolute spots. But the relative positions are governed by a set of rules.
4. Elimination (Capture/Immobilization) [Quantity of usable pieces on board matters]: Players seek to capture or immobilize one or more of opponent's piece(s).
* Royal: Players try to capture or put a particular opponent's piece or all of a type of pieces where piece(s) are threatened and into a place they can't escape capture (checkmate). This is for chess, chess variants, Shogi, Chinese chess, Ploy, kinglet, extinction chess, etc…
* Multipiece: Players try to eliminate (or immobilize) all, or a number, of an opponent's pieces (in general, not) before their opponent. Checkers fits here.
In Elimination, win condition are piece(s) in Null (meaning not on board) or piece(s) are immobilized. Try to eliminate something for win.
5. Fortuna: This is a unique category. It is for games that are less than perfect/pure abstract strategy games. Games with either hidden information or a randomizer fit here. To be part of IAGO, a game in the Fortuna category either belongs in Hidden or Tali, but not both.
* Hidden: These are games where players don't have perfect information. Kriegspiel (Dark Chess) and Stratego would fit here.
* Tali: These are games where a player uses a randomizer before they start their turn, such as dice. Backgammon and Parchisi fit here.
Tali is Latin for Knucklebones (a type of dice used in ancient roman games). Games randomized at start of game, before either player moves, don't fit here, but can still be an official game for IAGO, provided that they are fair to all players (either board layout is balanced, players have free setup that is fair, or players get to play all set ups by all players in the game).
